When I started running:
I started running by myself in 1997.

Why I started running:
I started running by myself in 1997 due to suffering heart attack at the age of 39, but stopped about two years later due to work hours not allowing sufficient time.

In 2015, Three weeks after taking early retiring from work, I suffered a second heart attack and decided health and fitness had to be the priority going forward.

I started running again by myself with the usual run/walk cycles to allow the body to adapt and at the same time looking for a running club, however, these were almost non-existent in the Spalding area. After some time and some significant improvement in fitness, a Google search helped me find Halmer Harriers Community Running Club.

Joining the club was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! Everyone is very supportive and genuinely interested in the wellbeing of fellow members.

There are many good reasons for running and it’s a real eye opener to chat with members discovering their personal reasons: health, both physical and mental, general fitness, social, competition etc.

Until joining the club I hadn’t considered competing in races, but since I did I have raced at 10k, Half Marathon and most recently Marathon distance.

It is truly amazing how the body will adapt if you’re prepared to put the effort in.
